Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh houses the world's largest collection of van Gogh's work containing 700 pieces and 850 letters, from his early Dutch drawings to the later paintings in Provence. Originally part of the Stedelijk collection, it was moved to its own purpose-built museum in 1972. The collection is displayed in chronological order, with the earliest work from 1878 to the mid-1880s echoing the dark sombre tones of Dutch traditionalist influence.
The later paintings spanning the period from 1886, when he moved to Paris and came under the influence of the Impressionists, through to his death in 1890 are suffused with light and colour and are the works for which he is best known.
The museum also contains works by other Post-Impressionist contemporaries, such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Gaugin and Sisley.
