Originally four seventeenth and eighteenth-century Ashkenazi synagogues now connected by a modern construction of glass and steel, the Jewish Historical Museum is both a symbolic and historic reminder of the fracturing of Jewish history and cultural life during the Second World War.
The Talmudic saying 'Seeing leads to reflection; reflection leads to action' was taken as the maxim of the museum when it opened in 1987. The exhibits reflect the various historical elements which contribute to modern Dutch-Jewish identity; religion, culture, persecution and survival, Zionism and the Dutch influence.
Ritual robes and artefacts are displayed in the Great Synagogue and the library includes a 'mediathèque' containing a vast array of tapes and film footage.
